Captain Scott O'Grady's survival and rescue after being shot down over Bosnia last June is the stuff of legends. His reading is rather unpolished Ğafter all, he's a fighter pilot. However, as the story progresses from his thoughts and emotions at being shot down to his struggle to survive and evade capture, the reading becomes more interesting. He's so honest about his feelings of helplessness and dependence on God, as well as his love of family and country, that one can't help but admire and like the guy. In the end, his unpolished reading enhances the narrative. After all, this is his story, and what a story it is! I bought this novel to get inside the mind of a soldier, but
I got so much more! This is a fast-paced true life thriller of one man's
determination to survive in the most hostile environment. Even though I knew
Captain Scott O'Grady would survive, I still turned the pages eagerly
anticipating what would happen next. I laughed (about the cows) and cried (when
he visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) This is an excellent novel that will
linger in your mind long after you've turned the last page. I used to work for the Air Force as part of a large program to support the effective operation of electronic warfare equipment, so I had a pretty good understanding of some aspects of the shoot down in 1995. The book went far beyond the shoot down into a gut-wrenching story of survival. I almost felt like I was there. Scott then gave a good description of all the celebration and hoopla that followed. However, in my opinion, the best part of the story begins with "Amid the hoopla...". Scott showed true humility in recognizing all the players that made such a positive difference in his life, and in others. And, most important, he recognized that our devotion to material possessions and pre-occupation with self-serving actions really mean little or nothing in our lifetime. Our faith in God and our actions which are inspired by that faith are what's really important in our earthly existence.
