LGA  The Land Grid Array processors do not use pins at all, but instead they use pads.  These pads eliminate the problem of bent pins on microprocessors, reduces the complexity of manufacturer and allows the microprocessors to be soldered directly to a circuit boars.  Most motherboards still use a microprocessor socket that also has pads that align perfectly with the pads on the microprocessor itself.  This allows for a quick installation with no ZIF Connector (Zero Insertion Force) Connector necessary.  The reduction in complexity and the extra ZIF connector also reduces cost while increasing reliability.  The LGA boards are able to operate at higher power levels and at higher bus frequencies.

PGA  Pin Grid Array processors have a series of pins, usually with a spacing of 2.54 mm apart.  These PGA processors had problems with the need for a ZIF socket, bent pins and a lower contact area for the pins.  These processors could also be soldered the board but required plated through holes for each and every pin.  The pins also had a smaller contact area than the LGA type pads on newer processors causing hot spots on power pins and also reduced the ability of the processor to operate at higher bus frequencies because of the capacitance between the pins running parallel to each other and the inductance of the pins that were perpendicular to the contact runs on the boards.  The capacitance and inductance also acted like miniature antennas causing more cross talk between the pins and more noise in the circuits, also reducing the reliability of the data signal being transferred to different parts of the motherboard.
