Other improvements would also be made to the Gee Bee.  The "7" (R2) was to receive the Pratt & Whitney Wasp (740 hp) engine from her sister ship.  The number "11" (R1 Racer) would be getting a new Pratt & Whitney hornet (800 hp) engine on loan.  At Granny's insistence, the ship had been built with a stress factor of fourteen even though the Army was using factors of only eight or ten, so the plane was capable of handling the increased power.  To handle the additional torque, a ten-inch aluminum addition would be made to the rudder.  Because of past vibration problems with controllable pitch propellers, both planes were to have standard propellers.  1932 the Gee Bee R1 Racer, flown by Jimmy Doolittle, winner of the Thompson trophy was rated the worlds most dangerous race plane.  Jimmy Doolittle was also famous for the Doolittle Raids against Japan in the early part of  WW2 flying the B-25 Mitchell Bomber.
