B-25 Mitchell videos and DVD movies of the North
American B-25 bomber and military history of World War II.
The B-25 Mitchell The
North American B-25 Mitchell was one of the best-known medium bombers of
World War II, especially remembered for its use in the Jimmy Doolittle
Tokyo Raid on Japan in 1942 and its participation in every major theater
of the war. Less known, however, is its continued role in the postwar world,
both in military and civilian service. Thousands of war surplus B-25s sat
on airfields in 1945, available to the highest bidder. Though most B-25s,
as other warplanes, were scrapped and smelted, hundreds did enjoy a postwar
career in the civil sector. The B-25 is now one of the most prolific surviving
Warbirds, and this book tells the story of the type in the years since
the end of World War II. The B-25 bomber has provided diverse and distinguished
service in roles from fire-fighting to movie production. These videos and DVD
movies cover
all of these roles and includes hundreds of photographs, detailed appendices,
and individual aircraft histories of each of the civilian B-25 bombers.
The videos and DVD movies on this page cover the military history of World War
II as seen from the B-25 Mitchell Bomber.

Joseph Heller's novel was one of the seminal literary events of the 1960s,
but Mike Nichols's film ultimately proved too literal in its attempt to
bring Heller's fragmented fiction to the screen. Still, Nichols, who made
this on the heels of The Graduate, seemed the ideal candidate to tackle
this Buck Henry adaptation. The story deals with bomber pilot Yossarian
(Alan Arkin), who has flown enough missions to get out of World War
II but can't because the number of missions needed for discharge keeps
getting raised. The satire and absurdity of Heller's book get lost
in Nichols's effort to give screen time to the members of his all-star
cast, which includes Orson Welles, Jon Voight, Bob Newhart, Anthony
Perkins, Richard Benjamin, and Martin Sheen, among others. --Marshall Fine. Movie Suggestion by Ron Lapp, Winnipeg, Manitoba,

Amazon.com essential video of a World War II test
pilot.
A surprise sleeper hit when released in 1992,
this romantic fantasy works as a comedic adventure and a gentle tearjerker
thanks to Mel Gibson's appealing performance. He plays Daniel, a daring
test pilot who is deeply distraught by the apparent death of his girlfriend,
Helen, in 1939. Feeling little reason to live, he volunteers for a pioneering
cryogenics experiment and is thawed out 50 years later by two young
boys. They bring the confused pilot home to Nat's single mom, Claire (Jamie
Lee Curtis). There's a hint of romance, but Daniel desperately needs to
know if Helen really died in 1939, and he discovers that love has a way
of surviving a half-century leap in time. The premise is hokey and
certain plot details are conveniently ignored, but Gibson, Curtis, and
Elijah Wood (as Nat) hold it together with irresistible charm and
just the right balance of fantasy and drama. -- Jeff Shannon.
This is an exciting portrayal of the first American
attack on Japan in World War II. Featuring Spencer Tracy as Gen. Doolittle
and with Oscar-winning special effects, this is a faithful, dramatic
and
memorable account of the B-25 Mitchell raid on Tokyo.
There is no more ringing title among World War
II movies than Thirty Seconds over Tokyo, and the mission it celebrates
was unquestionably historic: a 400-mile bombing raid to carry the
war to Japan itself mere months after that nation's sneak attack on Pearl
Harbor. Yet the film is less memorable than many World War II pictures with less
exalted factual basis. At the time, critic James Agee eloquently
defined both its virtues and limitations as "a big-studio, big-scale film,
free of artistic pretension ... transformed by its not very imaginative
but very dogged sincerity into something forceful, simple, and thoroughly
sympathetic in spite of all its big-studio, big-scale habits." That
remains true today, but perhaps the movie--and its unimpeachably noble,
admirably life-sized characters--wouldn't seem so stuck in the amber
of a bygone era if Mervyn LeRoy and company had pumped a little "artistic
pretension" into it.
