One of the stopping points on the way to the North Pole was the city of Khatanga Siberia and a visit to see the Woolly Mammoth.

In order to see the Woolly Mammoth, you have to hike down the bank of the Khatanga River and walk under the city of Khatanga, Siberia in North Central Siberia.

As we continued out of the city of Khatanga and walked down the banks of the Khatanga River the temperatures dropped considerably.  You could feel the chill with every step down the bank of the Khatanga River.  

This photo was taken in 2002.  At this time the Khatanga river was only open for navigation for two months a year as some of the people of the city have told me.  You can see the boats stuck in the ice in this photo.  Not shown in this photo, however, was a huge ocean going ship that was beached and abandoned on the shores just about a half of a mile north of where this photo was taken.
