A look at the US Navy Aircraft Carriers, mainly the
The
USS Kitty Hawk
holds about 85
airplanes, more than 6000 military personnel, it
carries
as much as 1.2 million pounds of conventional weapons, it has trucks, fairly
large boats for the captain and the admiral, it can travel more than 32
knots and is one of most feared military machines in the world. All
this - and its mission is to keep the peace. Planned De-commissioning
in 2008 Class: Kitty Hawk Class, Built By the
New York
Ship Building Corp.,
Camden, N.J. Powered by Eight Foster-Wheeler boilers, four
Westinghouse geared steam turbines, four shafts, 280,000 shaft horsepower.
The Kitty Hawks length is 1062.5 feet (323.8 meters), its Flight Deck Width is
252 feet (76.8 meters) Width at sea level is 130 feet (39 meters).
The total displacement of the USS Kitty Hawk is about 60,100 tons Standard and 80,800 tons full
loaded. The USS Kitty Hawks speeds 30+ knots (34.5+ miles per hour
advertised ),
but I've seen 38 knots on our inertial navigation system. The Hawks range
14,805 at 20 knots or 7,400 at 30 knots. Ship's
Company is 3,150 and the Air Wing crew is about 2,480 on our
cruise in 1977 we had more than 6000 Sailors and Marines aboard.
Armament: Sea Sparrow launchers, 3-20mm Phalanx CIWS mounts.
The USS Kitty Hawk is one of the greatest
aircraft carriers that has ever sailed.
