Compared to other submarines of the time, Gato-Class submarines could almost be considered luxurious. They were air-conditioned, equipped with refrigerators, and even had a bunk for every crewman. Nevertheless, they were still claustrophobic, dangerous postings. Of 77 Gato-Class vessels launched, 20 were lost. Despite their casualties, the American Submarine Fleet devastated Japanese shipping and the IJN. Gato-Class vessels like Wahoo, Darter, Dace and more are legends in the annals of naval history to this day.

USS Nautilus SSN-571 First Atomic Submarine Plastic Model Kit

USS Nautilus First Atomic Submarine
Plastic Model Submarine Kit

USS Nautilus SSN-571 was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine and the first vessel to complete a submerged transit across the North Pole. The USS Nautilus was initially put to initial sea trials in January 20, 1955. From 1955 to 1957, Nautilus continued to be used to investigate the effects of increased submerged speeds and endurance. On February 4, 1957, Nautilus logged its 60,000th nautical mile (111,120 km), matching the endurance of the fictional Nautilus described in Jules Verne's novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In May, Nautilus departed for the Pacific Coast to participate in coastal exercises and the fleet exercise, operation "Home Run," which acquainted units of the Pacific Fleet with the capabilities of nuclear submarines. Nautilus returned to New London, Connecticut, on July 21 and departed again on August 19 for her first voyage of 2,226 km under polar pack ice. On October April 25, 1958, Nautilus was underway again for the West Coast at San Diego, California, San Francisco, California and seattle, Washington. On June 28, Nautilus arrived at Pearl Harbor to await better ice conditions. Nautilus became the first ship to reach the geographic North Pole. Nautilus was designated a National Historic Landmark by the United State Secretary of the Interior on May 1982. Nautilus was named as official state of ship of Connecticut in 1983. Nautilus now serves as a museum of submarine history, after undergoing a five-month preservation in 2002, at the Electric Boat division of General dynamics, at a cost of approximately $4.7 million.

USS Florida SSGN-728 Nuclear Ohio Class Cruise Missile Submarine

Ohio Class Submarines, USS Florida SSGN-728 Model Kits

1/350 scale model of USS Ohio, the first-of-class ballistic-missile submarine of the US Navy (USN). Now Dragon is releasing a model of sister ship USS Florida (SSGN-728), which was the sixth ship in the Ohio class. Florida was commissioned on June 18 1983, and on her shakedown tour she successfully launched a Trident missile. In an important event in her life, USS Florida entered Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 2003 to undergo refueling and convert into a cruise missile submarine (SSBN to SSGN). This process was completed in 2006. USS Florida was heavily involved in Operation Odyssey Dawn, the intervention in Libya in March 2011. The 16,500-tonne submarine fired 93 Tomahawk cruise missiles to help overwhelm Libyan air defense targets. This was the first combat action for USS Florida, and indeed for any Ohio-class boat.

When a Japanese submarine sank the USS Indianapolis on July 30, 1945, 900 survivors were left to float for days in shark-infested waters. By the time they were finally rescued, only 316 remained. The Navy's response to this tragedy was to court martial Capt. Charles B. McVay III, a move that reeked of scapegoating and outraged survivors and the public. This video shows how McVay's name was finally cleared more than 50 years later, thanks in part to Hunter Scott, a 12-year-old 7th grader who researched the sinking of the ship for a school project.

The Depths of Courage, a Submarine Book from WW2

The Depths of Courage
Hardbound Book
American Submariners at War with Japan, 1941-1945.

Whitlock & Smith. This book chronicles the stories of the Americans who served in the World War II Pacific Campaign's "silent service," from the crippling attack on Pearl Harbor, which made the Submarine Force the primary defense against the Japanese fleet, through the long struggle to push the enemy across the Pacific, the unconditional surrender of VJ Day, and beyond. 432 pages, B&W photographs and illustrations, 6"x 9", hardcover.

In World War II, a chosen few fought a silent war beneath the waves...These are their stories. In the dark days after Pearl Harbor, the small, ill-equipped arm of the Navy known as Submarine Force would stand between the shattered U.S. Pacific Fleet and the might of the Japanese Navy. Unfortunately, the spirit and courage of the Submarine Force is being forgotten as the veterans of that force pass into history. To preserve their heroic tales of war beneath the sea, critically acclaimed author and military historian Flint Whitlock, in collaboration with decorated WWII submarine veteran Ron Smith, set out on a journey of more than two years to interview submariners and to record their stories before the memories of their endeavors are lost forever. Here, those stories are chronicled in honor of those who gave their all for their country.

The Hunt for Red October

The Hunt for Red October
DVD Movie, Super Excellent

In this tense 1990 thriller based on a Tom Clancy novel, Alec Baldwin stars as CIA analyst Jack Ryan, who must figure out the true motives of a Russian submarine captain (Sean Connery) directing the Soviet Union's newest nuclear-powered ballistic missile sub - the Red October, a Typhoon-class sub equipped with a revolutionary silent propulsion system - toward the U.S. coast. This Special Collector's Edition includes a "making of" featurette, director's commentary, and more. Widescreen, Dolby Digital, Rated PG. 2 hrs. 15 min.

In the tradition of DIE HARD and PREDATOR, director John McTiernan presents audiences with yet another techno thriller: THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Sean Connery plays Captain Marko Ramius, a dissatisfied Russian commander who navigates his submarine towards America in an attempt to defect. Soviet intelligence claims that Ramius is a warmonger and that he plans to launch nuclear missiles at the United States. Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin), an iconoclastic CIA agent, believes otherwise: American spies have determined that the submarine is powered by a stealth engine. In order to save the "caterpillar drive" and avoid a nuclear incident, Agent Ryan must board the Red October and assist Captain Ramius in its navigation to U.S. waters. Both murky and captivating, the underwater visual and sound effects are reminiscent of DAS BOOT. Once again director McTiernan produces a winning film with a jagged plot, a well acted script, and plenty of explosions.

Operation Petticoat
DVD Movie, Very Good Comedy

Operation Pettycoat DVD VideoStarring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis, this 1959 Blake Edwards comedy tells the story of a fictional American submarine, the USS Sea Tiger, sunk in the Philippines during the opening days of World War II. As the crew tries to repair the sub and continue to Australia for the necessary refit, the voyage includes various detours, including the acquisition of a group of stranded female Army nurses and a hurried stopover to overhaul and repaint the submarine in the only available color: pink. Widescreen, 2 hrs. 2 min.

Cary Grant and Tony Curtis star as naval officers in this service comedy, one of the director's favorite genres. When Adm. Matt Sherman's (Grant) submarine, the Sea Tiger, is damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he needs to find spare parts to have it recommissioned. Into the breach steps aide Lt. Nick Holden (Curtis), a master con man and wheeler-dealer who begins scheming to acquire the materials needed to fix the sub while the appalled Sherman looks the other way. Once the sub is deemed seaworthy, they stop at an island where Holden picks up a couple of Filipino families and five navy nurses who have been stranded there. The arrival of the extremely attractive nurses in the sub's cramped quarters has the predicted effect on the young, all-male crew, who soon find concentrating on their work to be an impossible task. The women also have their own ideas about the renovation of the submarine, one of which involves painting it pink. Despite the dated 1950s gender stereotypes, the comic genius of Grant and the energy of Curtis, in addition to a script witty enough to have been nominated for an Academy Award, keep the film afloat. Among the talented cast are Dick Sargent, Arthur O'Connell, Dina Merrill, Gene Evans, and Gavin McLeod, who would later return to the seas as the captain of THE LOVE BOAT.

The Enemy Below DVD Movie

Starring Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens and winner of an Academy Award for special effects, this is a study in submarine warfare from both sides of the battle. Mitchum plays the captain of a U.S. destroyer escort caught in a cat-and-mouse game with Jurgens, the honorable and compassionate captain of a German U-boat. And though the two men develop a mutual respect as they pursue one another throughout the North Atlantic, the climax of the chase is both tension-filled and moving. Color, widescreen, Dolby stereo. 1 hr. 38 mins.

DVD Movie
This 1971 film stars Peter O'Toole as an Irish merchant seaman in World War II who - having miraculously survived a massacre by German submariners - learns to fly a J2F Duck in an attempt to avenge the slaughter of his shipmates by destroying a German U-boat crew in South America. Widescreen, Dolby Digital 2.0, Rated PG-13. 1 hr. 46 min.

Murphy is the sole survivor of his crew, that has been decimated by a German U-Boat in the closing days of World War II. He lands on a forgotten island and begins to plot his vengeance. He wishes to sink the U-Boat that has floated up by means of any method imaginable to him, and sets about to make the courageous attempt, assisted by Louie, the islands Government Administrator.

Submarine Study Notes

Ohio Class Submarines

THE OHIO CLASS IS A CLASS OF NUCLEAR-POWERED SUBMARINES USED BY THE UNITED STATES NAVY. THE NAVY HAS 18 OHIO-CLASS BALLISTIC MISSILE SUBMARINES (SSBN) AND GUIDED MISSILE SUBMARINES (SSGN).

THE OHIO CLASS IS NAMED AFTER THE LEAD SUBMARINE OF THIS CLASS, USS OHIO. THE 14 TRIDENT II SSBNS TOGETHER CARRY APPROXIMATELY FIFTY PERCENT OF THE TOTAL US ACTIVE INVENTORY OF STRATEGIC THERMONUCLEAR WARHEADS. THE EXACT NUMBER OF WARHEADS DEPLOYED IN THE OCEANS OF THE WORLD VARIES IN AN UNPREDICTABLE AND CLASSIFIED MANNER, ALWAYS AT OR BELOW A MAXIMUM NUMBER SET BY VARIOUS STRATEGIC ARMS REDUCTION TREATIES. ALTHOUGH THE TRIDENT MISSILES HAVE NO PRE-SET TARGETS WHEN THE SUBMARINES GO ON PATROL, THE WARSHIPS, WHEN REQUIRED, ARE CAPABLE OF QUICKLY BEING ASSIGNED TARGETS BY USING SECURE AND CONSTANT RADIO COMMUNICATIONS LINKS AT SEA, INCLUDING VERY LOW FREQUENCY (VLF) SYSTEMS.

ALL THE OHIO-CLASS SUBMARINES, EXCEPT FOR THE USS HENRY M. JACKSON (SSBN-730), ARE NAMED FOR U.S. STATES, WHICH UNTIL THAT POINT WAS A TRADITION RESERVED FOR BATTLESHIPS AND CRUISERS.

THE OHIO-CLASS SUBMARINES ARE THE LARGEST SUBMARINES EVER BUILT FOR THE U.S. NAVY. TWO CLASSES OF THE RUSSIAN NAVY'S SUBMARINES HAVE LARGER TOTAL DISPLACEMENTS: THE SOVIET-DESIGNED TYPHOON-CLASS SUBMARINES HAVE MORE THAN TWICE THE TOTAL DISPLACEMENT, AND THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION'S BOREI-CLASS SUBMARINES HAVE ROUGHLY 25 PERCENT GREATER DISPLACEMENT, BUT THE OHIO-CLASS WARSHIPS CARRY MORE MISSILES AND WARHEADS THAN EITHER OF THE OTHER DESIGNS: 24 TRIDENT MISSILES PER BOAT, VERSUS ONLY 16 MISSILES FOR THE BOREI CLASS (20 FOR THE BOREI II) AND 20 FOR THE TYPHOON-CLASS.

THE OHIO-CLASS SUBMARINES WERE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR EXTENDED WAR-DETERRENCE PATROLS. EACH OF THESE SUBMARINES IS PROVIDED WITH TWO COMPLETE CREWS, CALLED THE BLUE CREW AND THE GOLD CREW, WITH EACH CREW SERVING TYPICALLY ON 70- TO 90-DAY DETERRENT PATROLS. TO DECREASE THE TIME IN PORT FOR CREW TURNOVER AND REPLENISHMENT, THREE LARGE LOGISTICS HATCHES HAVE BEEN INSTALLED TO PROVIDE LARGE-DIAMETER RESUPPLY AND REPAIR ACCESS. THESE HATCHES ALLOW RAPID TRANSFER OF SUPPLY PALLETS, EQUIPMENT REPLACEMENT MODULES, AND MACHINERY COMPONENTS, SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCING THE TIME REQUIRED FOR REPLENISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE SUBMARINES.

THE CLASS'S DESIGN ALLOWS THE WARSHIP TO OPERATE FOR ABOUT FIFTEEN YEARS BETWEEN MAJOR OVERHAULS. THESE SUBMARINES ARE REPORTED TO BE AS QUIET AT THEIR CRUISING SPEED OF 20 KNOTS (37 KM/H; 23 MPH) OR MORE THAN THE PREVIOUS LAFAYETTE-CLASS SUBMARINES WERE AT 6 KNOTS (11 KM/H; 6.9 MPH), ALTHOUGH EXACT INFORMATION REMAINS CLASSIFIED. FIRE CONTROL FOR THEIR MARK 48 TORPEDOES IS CARRIED OUT BY MARK 118 MOD 2 SYSTEM, WHILE THE MISSILE FIRE CONTROL (MFC) SYSTEM IS A MARK 98.

THE OHIO-CLASS SUBMARINES WERE CONSTRUCTED FROM SECTIONS OF HULL, WITH EACH FOUR-DECK SECTION BEING 42 FT (13 M) IN DIAMETER. THE SECTIONS WERE PRODUCED AT GENERAL DYNAMICS ELECTRIC BOAT'S QUONSET POINT, RHODE ISLAND FACILITY, AND THEN ASSEMBLED AT THEIR GROTON, CONNECTICUT SHIPYARD.

THE US NAVY HAS A TOTAL OF 18 OHIO-CLASS SUBMARINES WHICH CONSIST OF: 14 SSBNS (FLEET BALLISTIC MISSILE SUBMARINES (FBM)), EACH ARMED WITH UP TO 24 TRIDENT II SUBMARINE-LAUNCHED BALLISTIC MISSILES (SLBM); THEY ARE ALSO KNOWN AS "TRIDENT" SUBMARINES, AND PROVIDE THE SEA-BASED LEG OF THE NUCLEAR TRIAD OF THE US STRATEGIC NUCLEAR WEAPONS ARSENAL; FOUR SSGNS (CRUISE MISSILE SUBMARINES), EACH CAPABLE OF CARRYING 154 TOMAHAWK CRUISE MISSILES WITH EITHER CONVENTIONAL OR NUCLEAR WARHEADS, PLUS A COMPLEMENT OF HARPOON MISSILES TO BE FIRED THROUGH THEIR TORPEDO TUBES.

THE FIRST EIGHT OHIO-CLASS SUBMARINES WERE ARMED AT FIRST WITH 24 TRIDENT I C4 SLBMS.[4] BEGINNING WITH THE NINTH TRIDENT SUBMARINE, USS TENNESSEE (SSBN-734), THE REMAINING BOATS WERE EQUIPPED WITH THE LARGER, THREE-STAGE TRIDENT II D5 MISSILE.[5] THE TRIDENT II MISSILE CARRIES EIGHT MULTIPLE INDEPENDENTLY TARGETABLE REENTRY VEHICLES (MIRV), IN TOTAL DELIVERING MORE DESTRUCTIVE POWER THAN THE TRIDENT I MISSILE AND WITH GREATER ACCURACY. STARTING WITH USS ALASKA IN 2000, THE NAVY BEGAN CONVERTING ITS REMAINING BALLISTIC MISSILE SUBMARINES ARMED WITH C4 MISSILES TO CARRY D5 MISSILES. THIS TASK WAS COMPLETED IN MID-2008.

THE FIRST EIGHT SUBMARINES HAD THEIR HOME PORTS AT BANGOR, WASHINGTON, TO REPLACE THE SUBMARINES CARRYING THE POLARIS A3 MISSILE THAT WERE THEN BEING DECOMMISSIONED. THE REMAINING TEN SUBMARINES ORIGINALLY HAD THEIR HOME PORTS AT KINGS BAY, GEORGIA, REPLACING THE POSEIDON AND TRIDENT BACKFIT SUBMARINES OF THE ATLANTIC FLEET. DURING THE CONVERSION OF THE FIRST FOUR SUBMARINES TO SSGNS (SEE BELOW), FIVE OF THE SUBMARINES, PENNSYLVANIA, KENTUCKY, NEBRASKA, MAINE, AND LOUISIANA, WERE TRANSFERRED FROM KINGS BAY TO BANGOR. FURTHER TRANSFERS OCCUR AS THE STRATEGIC WEAPONS GOALS OF THE UNITED STATES CHANGE. IN 2011, OHIO CLASS SUBMARINES CARRIED OUT 28 DETERRENT PATROLS. EAModern US Navy Submarines BookCH PATROL LASTS AROUND 70 DAYS. FOUR BOATS ARE ON STATION ("HARD ALERT") IN DESIGNATED PATROL AREAS AT ANY GIVEN TIME. USS OHIO (SSGN 726), USS MICHIGAN 9SSGN 727), USS FLORIDA (SSGN 728), USS GEORGIA (SSGN 729), USS HENRY M. JACKSON (SSBN 730), USS ALABAMA (SSBN 731), USS ALASKA (SSBN 732), USS NEVADA (SSBN 733), USS TENNESSEE (SSBN 734), USS PENNSYLVANIA (SSBN 735), USS WEST VIRGINIA (SSBN 736), USS KENTUCKY (SSBN 737), USS MARYLAND (SSBN 738), USS NEBRASKA (SSBN 739), USS RHODE ISLAND (SSBN 740), USS MAINE (SSBN 735), USS WYOMING (SSBN 742)

For years, the Ohio-class submarine served as one of the frontline weapons in America's nuclear Navy. But with the collapse of the USSR, America needs to modernize its arsenal to take into account its new enemies. With that goal, the Navy begins a controversial conversion of the USS Ohio to take America into the future of naval warfare. The Ohio's ballistic missiles have been replaced, the tubes now capable of a two-pronged attack. What had been used to house ICBMs now can contain SEALs or a new prototype of underwater submarine, a revolutionary undersea fighter that flies through the water, striking targets at will. Both barrels will be brought to bear against America's newest enemy, Iran. The zealots in power have unleased a terrible two-pronged plan, hoping to attack oil rich nations Oman and the UAE, while at the same time lauching a devasting attack on the American Fifth Fleet in the Gulf. Only one group of sailors and commandos can stop them -- the compliment of the USS Ohio.

Only one group of sailors and commandos can stop them -- the compliment of the USS Ohio.

With new enemies to fight, the U.S. Navy embarks on a controversial project to convert a ballistic nuclear missile submarine into something even more deadly. The first boat to undergo the transformation: the U.S.S. Ohio. Original.

Sub Base Pearl Harbor

Naval Art Print
Tom Freeman. Though U.S. battleships were the main target of the December 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, it was the USS Tautog, a submarine, that was the first to bring down an enemy aircraft. 24"x 19" limited edition print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Tribute to Tom Freeman

Tom Freeman passed away, unexpectedly, on June 16, 2015. A brilliant artist, he will be missed by so many around the world. His prints are now signed by his wife.

Tom Freeman was born in Pontiac, Michigan in 1952. He was the third child of James and Doshia Freeman, (3rd of 5 children). The Freeman's lived in Michigan until Tom was 12 years old when the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland.

Tom never had any formal art training and had always considered his talent as a God given gift. In fact school was of very little interest to him. Tom joined the U.S. Marine Corp Reserve in 1970. He later transferred from the Marine Corps Reserve to the regular Army. His military service extended from 1970 to 1977.

Tom's professional art career started when he left the military. He would visit the U.S. Naval Institute and would take samples of his work to them. Finally, he asked what it would take to get his artwork on Proceedings Magazine. A gentleman by the name of Dell Kaiser showed Tom the artwork of Carl Evers. Tom contacted Carl and to this day considers Mr. Evers the master of watercolors. "Carl was very supportive, he told me to look closely at the art and that I would figure it out on my own." Finally, Proceedings used one of Tom's paintings for their cover. This started Tom on the path of success.

Tom started taking 35mm slides of his work and sending them to various book publishers. The first publisher to contact him and offer him a cover was G.P. Putnam & Sons. Tom has worked with most of the large publishing houses such as Dell, Jove, Bantam, and Berkley. Tom's work has appeared on many magazines such as Readers Digest, Popular Mechanics, Boating, Yachting, Business Week, and even the TV Guide. His work has been placed on porcelain plaques and plates for Franklin Mint and the Hamilton Group.

Tom's artwork has been exhibited in many galleries Kirsten, Greenwich, Mystic, and the Grand Central Gallery. He has done work for the National Parks Service and many corporations throughout the world.

In 1986 Tom was asked to hang his original paintings in the West Wing of the White House. Currently, there are 8 original paintings hanging there along with several of his limited edition prints.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Tom produced a collection of 42 paintings now on permanent exhibit at the Arizona Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tom completed 12 paintings, which were on exhibit at the Naval Museum in Washington, DC. commemorating the 60th anniversary of the attack.

One of Tom's paintings was donated to the State of Israel; it hangs in the Immigration/Clandestine and Naval Museum in Haifa.

On April 10, 2002 Tom had the honor of giving one of his paintings to the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II in Vatican City, Rome. The painting is hanging in Pope Pius IX museum in Italy.

The White House Historical Association commissioned Tom for 4 years to produce cover art for the Association's annual Christmas card.

Tom was awarded the Department of the Navy Superior Public Service Award on April 3, 2003.

On September 3, 2003 Tom presented a painting to President George W. Bush depicting the President's landing aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln. The painting was presented to him in the Oval Office.

Tom won the 2003 Gold and Platinum Ozzie Award in the category of "Best use of illustration for a single article," Popular Mechanics Magazine, The Hearst Corporation.

Tom also won the SILA award for the 42nd Society of Illustrators Los Angeles annual contest; winning the silver award for Editorial Artwork.

Tom had been selected as the first artist in residence to the United States Naval Institute.
