John J Story Jr. Receives Air Medal

 

An Eighth Air Force Bomber Station, England -- Second Lieutenant John J. Story, 21 of Ashburn, co-pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress, has won the Air Medal for "meritorious achievement -- coolness, courage and skill" during Eighth Air Force bombing attacks on military and industrial targets in Nazi Germany.

Lt. Story is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Story, Ashburn.  Before entering the Army Air Forces, the heavy bomber pilot was a student in the University of Georgia.  He is a graduate of Ashburn High School.

A member of the Third Bombardment Division, cited by the President for its now historic England - Africa shuttle bombing of Messerschmitt plants at Regensburg, Germany.  Lt. Story has participated in aerial assaults on such well known Nazi targets as manufacturing centers at Regensburg, Kassel, Ludwigshafen, Nuremberg and Cologne.

My Dear Mr. Story:

I have the honor to inform you that, by direction of the President, the Air Medal has been awarded to your son, Second Lieutenant John J. Story, Jr., Air Corps.  The citation is as follows:

Air Medal

"For meritorious achievement while participating in heavy bombardment missions in the air offensive by this Officer upon these occasions reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States."

Since this award cannot be formally presented to your son at this time, the decoration will be presented to you.  The Air Medal will be forwarded to the Commanding General, Fourth Service Command, Atlanta, Georgia, who will select an officer to make the presentation.  The officer selected will communicate with you concerning your wishes in the matter.

May I again extend my deepest sympathy.
