From 12 February until 22 May the Noorderlicht will over winter in the ice in Tempelfjorden, Spitsbergen.   The 'Noorderlicht' season starts approximately in May. In this month she sails up north towards the arctic areas of Norway and Spitsbergen.   But, back in the winter period, she sails into the Tempelfjorden on the island of Spitsbergen, Norway, to serve as a restaurant and hotel for snowmobile visitors.  Noorderlicht means the Northern Lights in English.  The 46-meter (138 Ft.) two-mast sailing vessel 'Noorderlicht' was originally built as a lightship on the Baltic Sea. The steel hull of the ship was modified to endurance ice settings at sea. The Noorderlicht was bought in 1991 by the present owner and converted into a charter ship that conforms to the extremely stringent Dutch quality requirements, so she can be sailed around the world.
