This picture  shows a close-up of one of the mines displays.  I'm really not sure what they are showing in this display but it has something to do with the mine shafts themselves.  Before I took any pictures here I asked if it was ok if I did use my camera here.  I was wearing a Russian hat that I bought in Moscow, I had black shoes, black pants and a black jacket.  So after I asked, the mine operator said, "Are you Russian."  I said no I was not.  He then went on to give me permission to take the photos.  I don't know if he was joking or if there was a real problem with a Russian taking pictures.  Anyway, here's the pictures.

The Longyearbyen Mine #7 produces about 70,000 tons of coal per year.  It sells most of its coal to the Longyearbyen power plant and exports the rest.  The other mine on Spitsbergen is, I believe, the SVEA mine which I plan to visit next year.  The SVEA mine produces about 1,000,000 tons of coal per year which is a lot more than this mine #7 produces.

For your information, the name of the city Longyearbyen comes from an American named Longyear.  Byen means city or town so the name really means Longyear Town.

Below are some real good links that explain in more detail about the Longyearbyen mining history and operations.
