Pictures of the Blue Ice of the Worthington Glacier in Alaska.

C. Jeff Dyrek, Webmaster at the Kenai Peninsula Alaska. Oct 2006
Keep following these pictures of the Worthington Glacier for more blue ice.  Alaska is filled with glaciers, the blue ice comes from the fact that it is multi-year ice formed as the glacier grew.

As the Alaskan Worthington Glacier comes to an end, it opens up and shows it's blue ice.  The blue ice is formed by years and years of snow building up on the surface of the glacier.  As the snow continues to build, the pressure squeezes it into ice and also squeezes all of the air out of the ice.  This causes it to absorb the reds and lower frequencies in the visible spectrum and reflect or allow the blue to pass right through the ice.  Blue being a higher frequency of light.  This is why glaciers show this beautiful blue ice.  Alaska is filled with glaciers and if you go to Alaska, you need to look at, at least, one of them close up.
