The North American P-51 Mustang is probably the most famous of all of the World War 2 Aircraft Warbirds.

This aircraft was manufactured by North American Aviation during WW2.  The plane took only 90 days to design and became the worlds fastest propeller airplane, ever, setting all of the low altitude speed records for propeller driven airplanes even today.  There are many of these airplanes still flying today at air shows everywhere.  This plane is also a favorite at the Reno Air Races at Stead Field just north of Reno Nevada.  Many Warbirds race at Reno every September.  The P-51 is 32' 3" long, 13' 8" high, and a wingspan of 37'.  The mustang weighs 7000 lbs empty and has a max weight of 12100 lbs.  It used two different types of engines, the Allison and the Rolls Royce Merlin which produced 1650 lbs.  The racing planes, by contrast, pump out over 4500 hp.  The P-51 mustang had a max speed of 437 mph and a cruise speed of 275 mph.  The P-82 was a twin fuselage version of the P-51, with two engines.  These fighter books are listed by Amazon books and Historic Aviation book stores.
There are many versions of this plane, these specs cover only one version.

Ben Drew : The Katzenjammer Ace
by R. R. Powell, U. L. Drew (Contributor)

Story of the first Me-262 which was shot down by a P-51

Book Description
Urban "Ben" Drew was a Mustang pilot in the 375th Squadron of the 361st Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force. He was the first to shoot down two of the Luftwaffe's "jet wonder weapon", the Messerschmitt 262, and finished the war as a six plane ace. His tales of air combat over Europe are exciting reading.

This book is far more than a biography of Ben Drew. Powell has worked in details, anecdotes, and the stories of people around Drew,  to make readers feel that they were there. Colonel Christian, Bob McCandliss, Martin Johnson, and the other "Katzenjammer Kid", Bill Kemp, all flew with Drew and shared in the dangers of aerial combat. Their stories are all part of this book.

Georg-Peter Eder flew the Me262 and was one of the Luftwaffe's top aces. He specialized in attacking American bombers and shot  down more of them than anyone. The coincidences that brought two enemies together after Drew was given a medal forty years late, are  intriguing and lead to a last chapter which is as surprising as it is moving.

From the Back Cover
The BOTTISHAM FOUR Mustangs of the 375th Fighter Squadron over England in July, 1944. Each of these aircraft has a story, as do their pilots. This book is about airplanes and men - Colonel Christian the commander of the 461st Fighter Group (in Lou IV) who  disappeared after strafing a railroad yard; Lieutenant McCandliss who fought German jets and became a POW; the Katzenjammer Kids: Bill Kemp, a six plane ace who took on forty Luftwaffe fighters in E2S, and Ben Drew (in E2S), a six plane ace who had his  toughest fight in "Suzy G", was the first to shoot down two Me262s and sank the world's largest airplane; and Georg-Peter Eder,  Luftwaffe ace who shot down more heavy bombers and had more victories flying the Me262 than any man in history.

About the Author
R.R. "Boom" Powell was a career U.S. Navy officer who flew from carrier decks for sixteen years before starting to write about  aviation. His thirty-seven years as a pilot and especially his combat experience, give this biography of a fighter ace an immediacy and  familiarity not found in ordinary histories. Powell has written for several magazines and has a novel with the same setting as the Drew  saga in work as well as a Great War flying tale. He flies Boeing 747 freighters for an international airline when he is not writing or soaring  in his Libelle.

Although far better known for their exploits over the war-torn skies of Germany and Italy, the USAAF's premier  fighters, the P-47 and P-51, also made significant contributions to the victory against Japan from 1943 onwards. They saw action from Rangoon, India, to the jungles of New Guinea in 1943, and escorted B-29s on long-range  bombing sorties against the Home Islands in 1944/45. Interviews with several leading aces.

The Heavy Iron at Reno.
Handleman.

The whine of a tweaked Rolls-Royce Merlin  engine causes the ground to tremble as the steeply banked P-51 sizzles past the last  pylon in the Nevada desert. This is the Reno Air Races, where pilots push their  "heavy iron" to the limit. Captured here through breathtaking color photography is  the excitement and brilliance of the event, with a special section highlighting colorful  nose art displayed on the aircraft. 112 pgs., 120 color photos, 9"x 10½", sfbd.
