F-14 Tomcat Jet Fighter Books telling the True Story of these amazing jet fighters and the pilots that flew them.

The f-14A had two Pratt & Whitney TF-30 engines producing 20,900 lbs of thrust each with a total of 41,800 lbs of thrust.  Later models of the F-14 used 2 General Electric F110 engines producing, in afterburner, 27,000 lbs each and a total of 54,000 lbs of thrust.  The F-14 tomcat had an empty weight of 40,100 lbs with a max weight of 74,000 lbs.  The tomcat was 62' 8" Long, 16' high and had a max wingspan of 64' 1".  The F14 's cruise speed is 610 mph and it has a max speed of 1544 mph. This is the military 's second swing wing jet fighter, the first was the F-111.  This plane is a 2 place jet fighter and was termed the fleet defender.  It first flew on 21 Dec 1970 and had its first west coast fleet deployment on the USS Kitty Hawk, CV-63 in 1977.  I was on that cruise, C. Jeff Dyrek, webmaster.  We have a great exhibit on this cruise showing the tomcats, just here to see this cruise with the F-14 Tomcats   This page covers as many of the F-14 books as I could find, however I am still adding more F-14 books regularly.  These airplane books and fighter jets are listed by Amazon books and Historic Aviation Books.
There are many versions of this plane, these specs cover only one version.

The recollections from those who flew and worked with the Tomcat are unparalleled for their frankness and insight, but the real star of the book is the airplane itself, a vehicle that has so much heart, personality, and character, it ceases to be inanimate to those who are privileged to strap it on. Tomcat Alley :

A Photographic Roll Call of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat
(Schiffer Military History)
David F. Brown

"Tomcat Alley" contains over seven-hundred images depicting the venerable F-14 Tomcat, bureau number by bureau number. Each U.S.  Navy Tomcat is traced from date of delivery through February 1998. After a brief introduction, informative captions provide details  concerning every Tomcat model, modification, and the fate of each aircraft including those stricken due to operational accidents, retired  to the "bone-yard", or resting as "gate guards" at military installations around the country. The majority of Tomcats are shown in full-color  with images displaying every paint scheme worn by the F-14, including many water-based schemes applied during various tactical exercises and deployments. Images also include every squadron commander's aircraft, nose art, tail colors, over 150 patches and  insignia, bicentennial schemes, and Tomcats which participated in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Additionally, the Su-22, MiG-23, and Hi-8 killers are depicted along with "movie star" Tomcats from "Final Countdown," "Topgun," and "Executive Decision.",  over 875 color photographs, 9" x 12", appendices

Blue Ops, naval aviation showing how the military handles its jet airplanesBiography
Erik Hildebrandt
Aviation Photographer and Author of FLY NAVY: Celebrating the First Century of Naval Aviation

Erik Hildebrandt is one of the nation's premier aviation photographers who continues to pioneer new technologies and revolutionary techniques to capture innovative aerial images. His 20-year career has earned him more than 200 hours in military jet aircraft ranging from civilian air shows to military tactical jets.

For the past two years, Hildebrandt has traveled the globe documenting the vast universe of modern naval aviation. He has flown with deployed forces over war-torn Afghanistan, through the tranquil skies over Hawaii with the Blue Angels and practically everywhere in between

FLY NAVY vividly captures the excitement, power, motion and beauty of naval aviation through remarkable photographs that tell the stories of each aircrew and aircraft as readers ride along on incredible real-life missions. The book showcases every aircraft currently flying for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard as well as essays and artwork from such iconic figures as Barrett Tillman, Sergei Sikorsky, Robert "Hoot" Gibson and Hank Caruso. FLY NAVY will be released in March 2011.

In addition to FLY NAVY, Hildebrandt has authored seven, world-class coffee table books on a variety of aviation subjects including the Front Row Center series that follows the American air show circuit and Anytime, Baby!, a historic volume chronicling the last six units ever to fly the U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat.

Compelling Media Resource
Hildebrandt is an engaging and articulate resource for reporters, show hosts and bloggers. He transports audiences to the cockpit of some of the most elite naval aircraft with intense anecdotes from his experiences flying along with the naval aviation community world wide.

Hildebrandt was born and raised on Long Island, not far from where Grumman built the F-14 Tomcat. He describes his photography as an extension and expression of his life, from documenting his childhood exploits to creating fashion portfolios for models before ultimately realizing his dreams of aviation photography.

For more than 15 years, Hildebrandt has lived in a self-described state of total immersion in the world of aviation and aviation photography. He is a multi-engine rated private pilot and flies a 1968 Cessna
O-2A Skymaster that was formerly in service with the U.S. Air Force as a forward air control aircraft.

Hildebrandt graduated from the State University of New York at Binghamton with a Bachelor of Arts in American History in 1989. He lives with his wife, Christine, and their two young boys in the rural countryside east of Minneapolis, Minn.

Tomcat! : The Grumman F14 Story

Paul T. Gillcrist
Hardcover / Published 1994

TOMCAT! The Grumman F-14 Story is an exciting oral history of the most versatile air supremacy fighter in the world . . . much of it  written from the vantage point of the airplane's cockpit! Told in an anecdotal format, this new book is richly marbled with the salt air of  fleet experience. Perhaps the F-14 program's greatest success is its overwhelming acceptance by the youngsters in the fleet. Anecdotes  about the Tomcat legend abound . . . especially in the chapters devoted to its employment by the fleet in the oceans of the world. Of particular interest are the chapters dealing with the sale of Tomcats to Iran and the subsequent integration of the airplane into Iran's armed  forces. On-the-scene eye witness accounts provide a unique perspective of this fascinating aspect of the Tomcat story. TOMCAT!  contains over 150 photographs, most in color and never before published, and most of them taken by Tomcat aircrews with hand-held cameras. These provide a fascinating backdrop for the oral history contained in the book. This is not a garden variety history about an airplane. It is a sometimes heart-stopping story of how a controversial airplane finally made it into the hearts and minds of the fleet . . .  after stumbling at the starting gates of an outmoded defense acquisition system. It is the story of the best air supremacy fighter in the world! Rear Admiral Paul Gillcrist, USN (Retired), commanded a fleet fighter squadron on three carrier combat deployments to the  Tonkin Gulf during which he flew 167 combat missions over Vietnam. For these he was awarded seventeen combat decorations. In his  thirty-three year flying career as a fleet pilot and Navy test pilot as well, he flew 71 different U.S. and foreign tactical airplanes including  the U.S. Air Force's F-104, F-105, F-106, F-15, F-16, YF-17 and F-20. He flew the Navy's F-4, F-5, F-8, F-11, F-14 and F/A-18  as well as several key foreign tactical airplanes. During his carrier flying career, which spanned an amazing twenty-seven years, he commanded a fighter squadron, a carrier air wing and was the wing commander for all Pacific Fleet fighter squadrons. He flew from  sixteen carriers, and in his last flying assignment accumulated over four hundred flight hours in the Tomcat culminating, at age 51, in  becoming the first flag officer to land the Tomcat on an aircraft carrier - the U.S.S. KITTYHAWK on 21 October 1980. The author of  FEET WET, Reflections of a Carrier Pilot, Admiral Gillcrist is eminently qualified to write the F-14 story!, over 150 color & b/w photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"      #0001866
