Speed Is Life, More Is Better

Product Description
Speed is Life, More is Better begins with an unknown narrator reminiscing about his former F-18D squadron. Although the story unfolds as the group enforces a NATO no-fly zone imposed over Bosnia in the mid-90s, Speed is Life, More is Better is timeless. It explores how men cope, and could just as easily have taken place in Vietnam or Iraq. Speed is Life, More is Better is a Catch 22 with jets.

The Pentagon Paradox: The Development of the F-18 HornetThe Pentagon Paradox :
The Development of the F-18 Hornet
James P. Stevenson
Published 1993

As a former military officer, I was curious about this book upon hearing about it from a friend in the Naval aviation community. I have seen  factual evidence of this kind of procurement first hand. In fairness, all branches do it. The Army bought off on a very substandard Bradley (quasi-armored) for political reasons, for example. As I have no way of researching Stenvenson's facts, I keep an open mind but gauge that  against my personal military experiences. After reading this book, I have to admit allegiance to the lightweight fighter mafia. America cannot  afford 50-90 million dollar hyper complex fighters in limited numbers against aggressive factions that possess superior numeric air forces. I  believe that the military should invest in a reality check as to where our dollars are being thrown. The quote "Where is Naval Aviation going?"  really deserves in-depth consideration. Careers in the upper military ranks are being bolstered by people maneuvering for political and monetary gain shamefully at putting the lower ranks and our country at risk. Between the aerospace industry, the lobbyists, and the obscene amount of  money involved, it shouldn't come as a shock that politics and corruption are rampant. I enjoyed the book and have already made multiple  recommendations to other military officers and friends in the V-22 Osprey community.  Did the U.S. Navy avoid Congress's explicit direction to "navalize" the winning design in a fly-off competition - by lying to Congress with the argument that the winner was not carrier capable - and then develop the losing aircraft into an even worse fighter for its carrier squadrons? To find the answer James Stevenson, an experienced aviation writer, dug through government files and interviewed key players to present this hard-hitting, behind-the-scenes account of the development of one of the Navy's current front-line aircraft. His investigation exposes the politics of Pentagon weapons procurement, a process that pits service against service, the military against Congress, admirals against generals, pilots against engineers, hard liners against reformers. This book provides a developmental history of the F-18 Hornet from drawing board to its results in Desert Storm. It is the story of a multi-billion-dollar aircraft-design war between those military officers who insist that America's interests will be protected best by sophisticated aircraft, even if America can afford fewer of them, and a group known as the "Fighter Mafia, " who claim that larger numbers have always won in warfare and that for equal dollars America can only produce greater numbers if each one is less sophisticated. He shows that by picking the YF-17 - and renaming the F-17 as the F-18 - over the clearly superior YF-16, the Navy antagonized the Air Force, Congress, and its own F-14 community, and sparked a major legal battle. Undeterred, the Navy took the light, cheap YF-17 and loaded it with technology and weight, which produced an F-18 that has less maneuverability, less acceleration, a range no better than the1952-vintage A-4, and costs almost three times as much as the F-16. From its first flight in 1978, the F-18 performance continued to degrade. Nevertheless, in 1992 the Navy asked for additional money to modify the F-18 as the F-18E/F. This request was in reality funding for a brand-new

F/A-18 Hornet :
How to Fly and Fight (At the Controls , No 2)
David C. Isby
Published 1998

Book Description
Jane's At the Controls  is a new series providing a 'hands-on' briefing of what it is like to fly and fight in modern combat aircraft. By following a hypothetical mission set sometime in the near future, the full capabilities of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 will be revealed. With its APG-65 multimode radar and infra-red search and  tracking sensor, the Hornet can operate by day or by night over the harshest environment of all: the ocean. It can  carry a formidable ordinance load including Harpoon anti-ship missiles and SLAM, it's equivalent for land targets.  In this scenario the Hornets will use laser guided bombs for pinpoint precision against enemy missile craft lurking  among neutral shipping.    Part of the "At the Controls" series of military reference books, this work uses artworks, diagrams and photographs to take the reader through a jet fighter-bomber mission in the US Navy's F/A-18 Hornet. Following a typical mission from carrier deck to aerial combat, the book reveals how the F/A-18 detects targets on land, sea and in the air, and how pilots can engage multiple targets with the aircraft's array of guided missiles.

Hornet: The Inside Story of the F/A-18Hornet : The Inside Story of the F/A-18
Orr Kelly

This is a fine book. Although it is out of print, good used copies are easily available. Orr Kelly presents an interesting chronicle of the ideas,  business deals, politics, and people behind the development of the Navy's F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter. He starts by focusing briefly on the  Soviet Union's development of a supersonic bomber in the early 1970s, and the Navy's concern that it could be used against our carrier battle  groups. In chronicling the Navy's response to the perceived threat, Kelly does an excellent job profiling Vice Admirals William Houser and Kent  Lee. They had a common goal of using a smaller variety of aircraft to do more jobs with greater reliability, but different ideas about achieving it. Lee wanted a new, dual-role fighter/attack aircraft, and Congress allowed him to study the idea.   Congress eventually directed the Navy to develop the new plane from the winner of the Air Force's competition between the YF-16 and the YF-17. Kelly reports why the Air Force chose to develop the YF-16, and how the Navy was allowed to develop the YF-17 instead.  Kelly goes on to record the Hornet's very difficult technical development, including the initially deficient roll rate, the marginal fuel range, and worst of all, the cracks in the tail fin supports. The description of how the problems were solved or minimized is an interesting overview of the  challenges inherent with engineering any new plane, especially the F/A-18, born as it was from a demanding and probably foolish Congressional  directive.

The primary strength of the book is its balanced tone - Kelly presents both the good and bad events in the Hornet's development, and the strengths and weaknesses of the final design. This easily makes it one of the best books written about the Hornet.
