The Chinese Ski Team skis along an open water lead on their North Pole Expedition.  These leads can be anywhere from a half of a mile long to hundreds of miles long.  The leads can open up and close in just minutes or they can stay open until they freeze over.  Usually a lead will freeze over in about eight hours and it will be safe to walk over it in about ten hours.
