North Pole Travel and Global Warming, What it Means to You

What kind of gun is in this picture?  Is this one of those assault rifles?  You bet it is and it's legal in Northern Siberia.

This is a Kalashnikov assault rifle that is being sold in a sporting goods store in Khatanga.   The young man holding the gun is Andrew.  He was on this expedition with the purpose of jumping over the north pole on his 21st birthday.  Andrew is in a military school in the Kremlin which is much like our West Point.  He is a very smart person who speaks several languages.  He knows every American military plane by its number, he's a skydiver, he is learning motocross on a RM-250 Suzuki and he is a real nice person to top everything off.  Next year, when he finishes his military school, he will become a Russian Military Officer.  I was teasing him that they will send him to Sredney Island for his first command.  If you don't know, Sredney island is way north of the Arctic Circle way up in the Arctic Ocean.
