North Pole Travel and Global Warming, What it Means to You


 

This is Yuliya.  I learned a lot about how the ice moves in Northern Siberia from what she told me while we were crossing the Khatanga River. 

I can see the ice on the river flowing, but one thing that I never realized was that the ice below the permafrost line also flows.  It is very hard to build a home in Siberia because of this movement requires, very expensive, pilings to be placed deep into the ground to keep the structure from breaking up.
