This is Yuliya. I learned a lot about how the ice moves in Northern Siberia from what she told me while we were crossing the Khatanga River.I can see the ice on the river flowing, but one thing that I never realized was that the ice below the permafrost line also flows. It is very hard to build a home in Siberia because of this movement requires, very expensive, pilings to be placed deep into the ground to keep the structure from breaking up. |
